The Russians made it to space first, but ever since NASA has been the leader in the development of technology and exploration of near space and earth.
Space is a very dangerous environment. It is cheaper and more practical to send unmanned robotic spacecraft to do our research, but in the end we do not believe we've been there unless we go ourselves!
Look before you leap! Right now we can leap a small distance but we have to spend most of our effort just looking and theorizing! This section and the next is concerned with looking, from hobby to enormous projects.

Even Earth satellites have enough rocket power to take a trip or two round the moon and back as one had to recently because it was initially placed in a useless orbit - by accident.
