Glossary X...


X or X11 ("X" or "X-eleven") A graphics image format defined for the X Windowing system. On the Amiga these can be handled by ADPro's Professional Conversion Pack.
X-HEIGHT ("X-height") Defined as the height of a lowercase letter, not including ascenders and descenders.
XMODEM (pronounced "X-mo-dem") A software based error correction protocol for the transmission of data using a modem.
XMS ("X-M-S") Acronym for Extended Memory System.
XON/XOFF ("X-on X-off") A form of flow control for data transmission where special X-ON and X-OFF characters are sent between your computer and the modem as opposed to the hardware technique using RTS/CTS commands.
XT ("X-T") The first "hard disk" equipped MS-DOS machines that were introduced after IBM's original 8088 dual floppy PC. It's been suggested it was an acronym for "eXTra".
