A form of flow control for data transmission where special X-ON and X-OFF characters are sent between your computer and the modem as
opposed to the hardware technique using RTS/CTS commands.
The first "hard disk" equipped MS-DOS machines that were introduced after IBM's original 8088 dual floppy PC. It's been
suggested it was an acronym for "eXTra".
