These will suit the smaller Home Cinema systems where space is limited. Widescreen televisions generally display in the 16 x 9 format, but most also have a widescreen option for Cinemascope 16 x 6 format which leaves a black border at the top and bottom of the display. They are available in a range of sizes depending on the types.
  • CRT screens - with screen sizes ranging from 25" to 40", these can occupy a lot of floor space and weigh as much as they look, if not more. Image quality is good with extra such as PIP and 2P. Since prices have dropped they are great buying.
  • LCD screens - with screen sizes ranging from 15" to 34", these are typically very slim and relatively light, except when it comes to cost, as they can be quite expensive. Image quality is possibly not as good as CRT but better than plasma.
  • Back Projection screens - with screen sizes ranging from 40" to 70", these can also occupy a lot of floor space but are not as heavy as the CRT screens. Image quality is average, and can be hard to see in ambient light. Cheaper than LCD.
  • Plasma screens - with screen sizes ranging from 40" to 70", these are typically a bit fatter and heavier than LCD screens, and can be rather expensive. Image quality is not as good as CRT and can lag slightly, and they run rather hot, but they can still look impressive.

    Consider too the types of video signal that can be used to connect to your DVD player. If it accepts component input, then make sure that your DVD player can deliver a compatible signal.
